History
Acoustic Dixie Six was founded in 1999 in Helsinki, Finland. Many of the original members had played together in various jazz ensembles and shared a common vision of a real Traditional Dixieland Band. The mission of Acoustic Dixie Six has since then been to play happy jazz with traditional instrumentation, authentically and well played, with respect for tradition but leaving room for improvisation.
Acoustic Dixie Six
The name of the band refers to the general belief among the band that real Dixieland Jazz should be played without electric amplification, that is, acoustically. This policy renders the band quite versatile – performances can be arranged far from electrical outlets such as on rooftops, on boats, in buses, on carnival floats etc. This is also a logistical advantage – the whole band with gear fits into a regular minivan. Dixie is the other common denominator; nothing outside the band’s fairly strict definition of Dixieland Jazz has yet made it to the standard repertoire, although some stretching of the definition has been allowed when catering to requests from the
audience.
